When Gus Bradley went to interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ head-coaching job, he was 95 percent sure he wouldn’t get the job. He’s a coach coming off his first coordinator job to a franchise looking for a savior after years of losing. Needless to say, no pressure, Gus.

Bradley played college football at North Dakota State and began his coaching career there as a grad assistant. He then bounced around the college ranks until he landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006 as their defensive quality control coach. A year later, Bradley was promoted to linebackers coach for the Bucs, so his promotion through the ranks of coaching went really quickly.

In 2009, Bradley took over as the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, whose defense was a lowly 30th in the NFL the year before. Bradley’s first two years in Seattle were forgettable as the Seahawks’ defense went from 30th to 24th and then back down to 27th. However, 2011 brought a new beginning as Bradley’s unit finished ninth, and then fourth this past season that included a Wild Card playoff win, and one that got away against the Atlanta Falcons in the divisional round.

Bradley’s interview with the Jaguars wasn’t supposed to last long but they liked him so much, they asked him to stay for dinner and then worked out a contract before he left. It all happened really quickly, much like the rest of Bradley’s career, so he can’t get ahead of himself.

When coaches move up through the ranks as fast as Bradley did, there’s an expectation for immediate success and that’s impossible with a team like the Jaguars. Well, on the bright side, Bradley won’t have to worry about Tim Tebow coming to town. However, he does have to address the quarterback position while keeping the team’s only superstar–running back Maurice Jones-Drew–happy. Good luck, Gus.
