When the Chicago Bears fired Lovie Smith, everyone on his staff became subject to whoever became the head coach of the team. Essentially, all the coaches on the Bears staff were in limbo until a new coach was hired. They finally hired Marc Trestman and just a short time later, one of their coaches in leaving the den.
According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is leaving Chicago. Marinelli is a very well respected defensive coach who has opted to leave the Bears but could be landing somewhere else in a lesser role, with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys hired Monte Kiffin to run their defense and bring in the 4-3 Tampa-2 look last week. and one of Kiffin’s coaches with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was Rod Marinelli. Marinelli coached the Bucs defensive line for four years under Kiffin. and would make a perfect fit for the Cowboys. Marinelli is thought of as one of the games best teachers, especially for defensive linemen. With the Dallas defense needing to learn a new scheme, I can’t think of anyone better to hire than Marinelli.
Dallas already has a defensive line coach in who they really like in Brian Baker, but he’s coached under the 3-4 defensive alignment ever since he’s worked with the Cowboys. If the Cowboys were to bring in Marinelli, it would be interesting to see what would happen to Baker.
All the signs seem to be pointing to a reunion between Monte Kiffin and Rod Marinelli in Dallas, which would be a huge help to a Cowboys defense that is learning a new system. Then again, there were signs that Manti Te’o was dating a girl who never existed, so you never know.
