Chip Kelly and Michael Vick Shouldn't Get Too Close

When Chip Kelly decided to leave the University of Oregon to accept the head coach position with the Philadelphia Eagles, it’s a sure thing he took a good look at the tools he would have to run his type of offense. One of those potential tools, QB Michael Vick, is due a hefty sum of money from the Eagles if he’s still around after the Super Bowl.

Kelly reportedly met with Vick to discuss the quarterback’s future with the team and to see if the two would be able to coexist. The problem here isn’t that Vick is difficult to deal with, or that he wouldn’t be able to grasp the intricacies Kelly’s schemes (although some doubt that); the issues are money and time. Vick will get a guaranteed $3 million if he is still on the Eagles roster come February 6, and next opportunity the Eagles would have to try to make a trade wouldn’t be until mid-March.

That leaves few options for the coach that loves to use the option. Gambling that Vick would be the right guy could cost the Eagles a tidy sum, and if for some reason things didn’t work out–either by poor performance or injury–Philadelphia would be forced to eat that money, and still wouldn’t have a the quarterback Kelly wants.

With the QB crop in the 2013 draft shaping up to be one of the thinnest in many years, Kelly would probably be better off spending his time seeing if Nick Foles can be the man to run his offense, or if the Eagles will have to look at trades or free agency to find a QB. Taking a chance on a QB that will be 33-years old once the season begins, and whose only full season in a 10-year NFL career was in 2006, might be a bit of a stretch, especially given Vick’s recent issues with concussions.

Chip and Michael probably shouldn’t become the best of buddies, because the probability of the Eagles letting Vick fly elsewhere is pretty high.
