Greg Jennings is a top 10 NFL receiver. Period. However, he’s played for a team that doesn’t require him to put up top 10 receiver numbers every game. In fact, the Green Bay Packers have been better when Jennings plays the role of decoy. Even so, the team supposedly is content to go on without their free agent receiver according to the latest Packers rumors.
Ever since Jennings’ sister called out Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Twitter following the team’s 45-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC divisional playoffs, things haven’t exactly been peachy in Green Bay. Also known as “Title Town,” the below-average size NFL city is accustomed to winning and doing so without drama. But since his return from injury in 2012, Jennings’ tenure with the Packers has been filled with just that.
Of course, Rodgers brushed off the tweet like any pro passer should, but that doesn’t mean everybody is cool in Title Town. However, the emergence of Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb over the past season and a half have proven the Packers don’t need Jennings to be successful. Heck, Nelson was a top-five receiver, statistically, in 2012 with Jennings sidelined. Now with each and every day that passes another report, rumor or source says something that indicates the Packers might even prefer for Jennings to leave via free agency.
For starters, Green Bay isn’t going to pay the man what he wants and secondly, Jennings needs the Packers way more than they need him. If this little Twitter incident was more prominent than Rodgers is letting on and like many suspect, Jennings may already be looking for homes in places like Miami. Regardless of what happens, the Packers will be fine without Jennings, but he may not do so well without a quarterback like Rodgers throwing him the ball.
