NFL Rumors: Will the Minnesota Vikings Target QB Matt Moore in Free Agency?

With free agency right around the corner, NFL Rumors are heating up for nearly every franchise. The Minnesota Vikings don’t figure to make a whole lot of noise with big signings, but they do have some needs to address. Arguably the biggest concern to address in free agency is the backup quarterback spot. Joe Webb‘s future with the team is uncertain after coach Leslie Frazier acknowledged the team is open to bringing in a veteran quarterback.

Let’s be clear, Christian Ponder is the starter for Vikings heading into 2013, but the competition for his backup spot is wide open.

Personally, I’d rather see the team bring in a veteran rather than draft another young QB. The free agent market is not spectacular when it comes to QBs this season, but a player that fits the bill is Matt Moore.

Moore has spent the past two years with the Miami Dolphins, and given their QB situation, it’s unlikely he’ll re-sign to play in South Beach.

He’s is affordable (likely $2.5 million/year), and he’s experienced. Moore is the kind of guy who could actually compete for the starting job on a lot of teams. That won’t be the case in Minnesota, but I think Ponder will be on a short leash in 2013. There’s a good chance if he doesn’t improve from last year that Moore would get a shot to run the team.

For his career, Moore has completed 59.1% of his passes for 5,268 yards, with 33 touchdowns and 26 interceptions. In total, he’s started 25 games in five seasons. All in all, he’s got a very solid resume and would fill the backup role for the Vikings perfectly.

The main problem I see is that he may want to go to a team with more uncertainty at QB to try and win a starting job. He knows that he’ll at least be the backup to start in season in Minnesota, and at best he’d get a shot midway through the season to start.

We’ll see what direction the Vikings go in, but as far as I see it, Moore is at the top of the list of available backups. As of now, Minnesota is not rumored to specifically be targeting anyone, but they are indeed evaluating the backup quarterback position.
