There have been very few tight ends in the history of the National Football League that changed the game more than Tony Gonzalez. It appears that Gonzalez has played his last game in the NFL, with the Atlanta Falcons losing in the NFC Championship Game. It will be a real tragedy that Gonzalez will go through his whole career and never making it to a single Super Bowl.
Gonzalez went through most of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs before moving on to Atlanta hoping for just one Super Bowl, and it took until this season to just get one step away from that. Gonzalez brought a whole new dimension to the game with the ability of using his skills from his college basketball days on the football field. It brought about more tight ends like him in Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski, who are big and can stretch the field.
I know it is possible that Gonzalez changes his mind and decides to come back for 2013 but that doesn’t seem likely right now. Atlanta could easily get to the Super Bowl next season if they can avoid allowing double-digit leads to slip away. If Gonzalez feels he has the competitive nature enough for just one more season, I would go for it with the talent on the Falcons. It would just be right at this point to see Gonzalez get one more chance at the Super Bowl.
