NFL Rumors: Darrelle Revis to the Kansas City Chiefs?

It has been reported that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson will “explore trading cornerback Darrelle Revis.” Revis is one of the NFL‘s most popular players and physical corners. Revis will be a free agent come next season.

Revis is the only 100% pure shutdown corner in the NFL today. Everybody thought Nnamdi Asomugha was the next Deion Sanders, and look what happened to him in Philadelphia. Revis may be the single most valuable player in the NFL because of what he brings to the table. He can single handily take away half of the field from a quarterback. Revis eliminates the quarterbacks’ best target and is not an interception machine, only because nobody throws in his direction.

Now that brings us to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs weren’t the worst defensive team last season by any means, but they had some holes in the secondary. In 2012 the Chiefs had a respectable run defense at times. The Chiefs line-backing crew is full of pro bowlers and Andy Reid will stress run defense. The Chiefs pass defense ranked dead last in the NFL this season in interceptions with seven and allowed the second most touchdowns in the AFC with 29.

The last season Revis played in 2011, the Jets secondary only allowed 15 passing touchdowns to 19 interceptions. This years Jets team allowed 20 passing touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In 2009 the Revis led Jets defense allowed an incredible 8 passing touchdowns all season. Even when Revis doesn’t get his hand on the ball he still has an impact on the rest of the field.

Chiefs can’t offer a quarterback to the Jets but what they can offer is something nobody in the NFL can. They can offer the No. 1 overall pick in this years draft. The Jets are currently a financial disaster as they are $19.5 million over the cap, the highest in the NFL. After Restructuring Mark Sanchez‘s deal they may not be able to afford Revis. The Chiefs on the other hand sit comfortably at $16.1 million under the cap.

If Revis is looking for a big pay day, long term deal, no franchise tag and no controversy, Kansas City may just be the place for him.
