Houston Texans sign Stephen McGee to reserve/future contract
Despite his recent success, Houston Texans starting quarterback Matt Schaub is always an injury liability. To make matters worse, the team doesn’t offer much proven talent behind Schaub that would give them confidence if he were to go down again.
In hopes of strengthening their depth behind Schaub, the Texans signed former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee to a reserve/future contract on Thursday.
The former Cowboys backup was waived shortly after Dallas’ 53-man roster was set back in September to make room at the tight end position. Since then, McGee has had workouts with several teams, including the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but ended up spending the 2012 season on the streets.
A fourth-round pick out of Texas A&M in 2009, McGee spent his first three seasons in the NFL as the backup to Tony Romo. Throughout his three years in Dallas, he amassed 420 yards and three touchdowns while completing 46 of 82 passes (56.1 percent). He also totaled 102 rushing yards on 17 carries. The Cowboys’ acquisition of veteran Kyle Orton during the 2012 offseason made his services expendable.
Now with the Texans, McGee will battle with 2012 undrafted rookie free agent Case Keenum for the No. 3 spot on the quarterback depth chart behind Schaub and backup T.J. Yates. Considering his experience in the league and capable quarterbacking skills, there’s a good chance that McGee could stick for the time being. Don’t be surprised if the raw-yet-promising Keenum puts up a legitimate fight, though.
It’s not exactly an impact move, but it’s one more attempt by the Texans to prepare themselves for another serious playoff run in 2013.
