This week has had a split personality for members of the Oakland Raiders.
While the coaching staff is running college seniors through drills in preparation for the 2013 Senior Bowl in Mobile Ala, fullback Marcel Reece has been celebrating his season with a trip to Hawaii for the 2013 Pro Bowl. It could not be a more perfect summary of the Raiders’ 2012 season. Reece was one of the biggest offensive playmakers Oakland had this season, and is one of only three or four Raiders’ players that deserve to soak up the sun in Hawaii this week.
In Alabama, the Raiders have been hard at work trying to scout and coach up the best college seniors in the country in preparation for April’s NFL Draft. Although the Senior Bowl is vital scouting time, it is also a great opportunity for the new Oakland coaching staff to get used to working with one another. In the past week, the Raiders have hired three prominent NFL coaches to join the staff and all three have joined the team in Mobile to help in the scouting process.
This is the one week of the year the Raiders have a chance to steal some of the spotlight. The Senior Bowl is one of the biggest events this week and Oakland is front and center in the middle of it. In addition, to have a player like Reece at the Pro Bowl because he is such an unknown commodity. Many more people will know his name because for the rest of his career he’ll be a Pro Bowl fullback and that can only be a sign of good things to come for Oakland.
