Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Has Put Himself In A Win-Win Situation
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told everyone he was going to make things uncomfortable in Dallas this off-season and he has. I think he may have meant everyone except for himself. Since Jones is the owner and general manager of the Cowboys, there’s nothing anyone can do to make him uncomfortable except one thing, losing. Truth be told, that’s why there’s an uneasy feeling for the Cowboys now, because Jones has been uneasy for too long now.
Everyone knows that Jones wants a winning football team on the field, not only because it helps his pockets, but because it also soothes his ego. Jones will never give up his title as the general manager for the Cowboys and that has never been more evident than this off-season where Jones is making the moves he feels can put his team back into Super Bowl contention. With these moves, something else has become clear as well, Jones has put himself in a win-win situation.
Think about it, Jones is the one who has pulled the trigger on all the coaching changes so far. Whether you believe Jones is behind the moves or not is irrelevant because it was Jones who promised big changes and without that proclamation, do you think all of these coaches would have been fired or let go? Sure, Jason Garrett is the one actually firing coaches but that doesn’t happen without talking to Jones. So whether he’s been the one actually making the moves or not, you have to know Jones has had his say.
If the changes Jones has made work next year, he can sit back and say ‘look at how my changes have worked. Fans wanted change, I listened and I gave them change. They weren’t happy that Garrett was calling the plays, so we changed that. They weren’t happy with our defensive coordinator, so I changed that too.’ Hopefully that means the Cowboys are a playoff team and are able to make a Super Bowl run. If that turns out to be the case, Jones has no doubt set himself up to take the credit, just like he’s always wanted.
However, if the Cowboys flop again next season Jones will be able to say, ‘I heard the call for drastic changes and I made them. The fans wanted me to give up on my idea of having the head coach also be a play caller, which I did, and that failed too but I tried everything I could to field a winning team.’ If this happens, Jones can escape blame by saying he made changes, like the exact ones fans asked for, but it didn’t make a difference.
If that happens, your guess is as good as mine as to what Jones will do? He may bring in a big name coach like Jon Gruden but we just don’t know. Maybe he’ll realize there are no other options and he’ll have to give up some control, then the fans win, but who are we kidding that’s not going to happen.
This off-season has gone exactly the way Jerry Jones has wanted it to go, he’s set himself up to be the big winner next season. Just the way he likes it.
