I enjoy great celebrations, but it’s time for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton to leave Superman behind and just play football. Newton had an okay season in 2012, but it was nowhere near his potential and at times on the field, you just got a sense he still had a little growing up to do. His size, strength and speed are enough to make him the greatest quarterback of all-time, but he has to get out of his own head first.
Superman is indestructible, and this season Newton showed that he could be defeated. I am not saying that he has to completely get rid of the celebration, just put it on hold for a while until his team makes the playoffs and starts winning games on a big level.
Another thing I would like to see the Panthers stop doing is giving him the ball on the one yard line to score. Yes, it works almost every time, but sooner or later he is going to stretch out and get popped, and now you have a injured franchise quarterback. The Panthers don’t have a good backup, and them winning games starts and ends with Cam Newton.
This off-season will really tell the tale. If the Panthers can surround Newton with better blocking and one more solid receiver they are going to be a scary team in 2013. The defense can always get better, but if Newton limits his turnovers, there is no reason the Panthers can’t win ten or eleven games and at least be in the playoff conversation.
