Martellus Bennett: “One Or Two Gays On Every Team”
New York Giants’ TE Martellus Bennett isn’t one to shy away from any controversy. He embraces it. Controversy arose for San Francisco 49ers’ CB Chris Culliver when he was asked about former 49er OL Kwame Harris. Culliver told reporters, “I don’t do the gay guys man. I don’t do that.” The 49ers quickly distanced themselves from those remarks, stating they reject his statements.
Bennett, as he is accustomed to doing, decided to chime in. Bennett tweeted that he doesn’t understand why Culliver would even make remarks like that. He took it a step further, however, tweeting he believes every team has at least one or two gay guys.
Bennett may be correct, but it is highly unlikely that many players will come forward and admit to their homosexuality if they are indeed gay. There are 32 teams in the NFL, so if there are at least two guys on every team that are gay, that would make at least 64 players in the league. Bennett is clearly showing he has no problem with someone else’s homosexuality, but that may be a stretch.
There have been several NFL players over the years who have revealed themselves as homosexuals. Minnesota Vikings’ DL Esera Tuaolo certainly comes to mind when thinking about players who have recently admitted to being gay. Tuaolo is only one of three players in NFL history to openly admit to being gay. Others have been found to be gay as well, including one who perished to AIDS.
Culliver offended many people with his remarks. Bennett seems to be putting a sense of normalcy to the controversy. Leave it up to Bennett to be the one to do that.
