It will be a year of transition in 2013 for the Buffalo Bills and with that will come some changes to the team. I think one of the biggest possible changes could be if the Bills decide to part ways with Stevie Johnson. While Johnson is the team’s top wide receiver, he isn’t an elite receiver and Buffalo may decide to load up on draft picks instead of keeping him around.
Johnson does have three straight 1,000-yard seasons and may have some value in a trade. I think Buffalo should decide to build around Johnson instead of trading him away but who knows what new coach Doug Marrone is going to want to do. I don’t think Johnson would net much more than a fourth- or fifth-round pick in return anyway, but if Buffalo can find a way to get at least a third-round pick, it would be very tempting. I sense that Marrone is going to look to have an even split of rushing and passing and whatever happens at quarterback could decide what happens with Johnson.
If Buffalo goes young with a rookie quarterback, Johnson may end up staying just so the new quarterback has someone established to throw to. Buffalo could go out in free agency and pick someone else up as well and I think in that case, Johnson ends up leaving town via trade. It will be a very interesting offseason for the Bills and with Johnson to see where all the pieces fit before the 2013 season gets started in September.
