With the Super Bowl just two days away, Rant Sports has been traveling back in time to take a look at what happened in past championship games. Here’s a look at this date, February 1st, in Super Bowl history.
February 1, 2004: New England Patriots vs. Carolina Panthers
Super Bowl XXXVIII would mark the continuation of a New England Patriots dynasty and the continued rise of a player that many now consider to be one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, Tom Brady.
The Patriots, who were playing for their second championship in three years, defeated the Carolina Panthers by a score of 32-29 in a game that many consider to be the greatest Super Bowl of all time. The teams combined for a total of nearly 900 yards and 61 points.
The game was eventually settled on a last-second, 41-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri, and Brady, after shattering several Super Bowl records, was named the game’s MVP for the second time in three years.
As great as this game was, it is remembered just as much for the halftime show, which featured Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson‘s controversial “Wardrobe Malfunction.”
February 1, 2009: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals
Though the Cardinals took the lead with under three minutes to play, the Steelers would score with just 35 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
Wide receiver Santonio Holmes won the MVP after a performance in which he caught nine passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. Forty-three of those yards came on the game-winning drive.
