Suing NFL Over Injuries a Classless Act

In May of 2012, Junior Seau took his own life in a very sad manner. It was extremely sad to see Seau, a future Hall of Famer, go out like that. What is also sad is former players and family members of players trying to benefit from someones else’s death financially.

Junior Seau played in 268 career NFL games. In 1994, Seau signed a four-year $14 million deal with the San Diego Chargers. Weird how there were no lawsuits then. Seau would, of course, go on to have a standout career as a linebacker who could do it all: Get to the quarterback, cover the tight end, tackle running backs, you name it. But now that the money isn’t pouring in for the Seau family from Seau’s football, they turn to lawsuits.

Every NFL player knows what they’re getting into when they sign up for this, literally. It’s in their contract. In 2004, Seau tore a chest muscle causing him to miss eight games and in 2005, he missed nine games because of an Achilles tendon injury. Did the Seau family sue then? No, because the money was still coming in.

Former NFLers who are also suing the NFL include notable players such as Jamal Lewis, Jim McMahon, Art Monk and Mark Rypien. All four of those players have won at least one Super Bowl. Also all four of those players have missed games because of injuries. Most notable is McMahon, who suffered multiple concussions throughout his career. Ironically, McMahon is also currently in a financial crisis reportedly borrowing over $100 million. McMahon missed games as far back as the 80’s, but he chooses now to sue?

So here we are. We have former players that are in financial crisis because they’re irresponsible with their money, chose to spend and not to save, just want handouts and can’t make a profit outside of the NFL. We even have family members suing the NFL. The NFL is the league that provided money, shelter, food, clothing, training facilities and a career for these players. And what do these former players do? Turn around and sue them.

All I can say to football players watching their actions, nobody is forcing you to play football. If you don’t want to play a physical sport, play something else instead.
