Victor Cruz Should Be More Important to New York Giants Than Hakeem Nicks
This time last season, the New York Giants were on top of the world with their second Super Bowl victory in just four seasons over the New England Patriots. A year later, the focus has now shifted to signing the team’s biggest weapons in Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks.
In my mind, the Giants should be more concerned about locking up Cruz rather than extending Nicks.
Nicks didn’t reach 1,000 yards this season for the first time since 2009 as he was sidelined with an injury and played in just 11 games. With his contract up after this season, the club is reportedly more focused on giving Nicks an extension rather than Cruz, who is a restricted free agent entering this NFL offseason.
Cruz has been a bit of a journeyman as he went undrafted and burst onto the scene in 2011 where he was a big part in the Giants reaching the Super Bowl. A year older than Nicks, they are the same height and are separated by just six pounds–Cruz is as equally talented as Nicks, and will show that if the Giants do extend him.
Giants management is overlooking just how consistent Cruz has been, with two consecutive 16-game seasons where he has averaged 84 receptions, 1,314 yards and 9.5 touchdowns. I understand that Cruz doesn’t have the postseason success that Nicks has had, but his relationship with Eli Manning is great and should not be overlooked.
It would be a big mistake for the Giants to let Cruz walk away because of his production in these past two seasons.
