Since signing a hefty extension worth around $53 million, it’s been no secret Chris Johnson has failed to live up to the expectations of the Tennessee Titans as he’s rushed for a combined 2,290 yards over the last two seasons to go along with 10 touchdowns–which he almost topped during the 2009 season alone when he rushed for 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns. Whether it was Johnson to blame or simply the offensive line, the fact is the Titans have every reason to be frustrated with their running back and it wouldn’t have come as a surprise to see them part ways before the 2013 season to save some money.
Luckily for Johnson–that may not longer be the case anymore.
One of the top NFL rumors this week involves Tennessee’s plans to keep Johnson around as the team claims that cutting the running back was never even an option–even if he had displayed disappointing numbers over the last two seasons. Then again, the Titans did guarantee Johnson $30 million in his hefty contract–so there’s a good chance that’s playing a key factor in their decision as well.
The fact that Johnson rushed for 24 yards or less in four of the first five games for the Titans last season is just one of many examples of how he’s been on the decline since receiving the new contract and the team has every reason in the world to be concerned about their running back heading into 2013. Johnson used to be one of the top running backs in the league and now–it’s difficult to even imagine him being in the top 15.
