2013 NFL Draft: Could the Chicago Bears Select Manti Te'o at No. 20?

In the first half of the 2012 regular season, the Chicago Bears arguably had the best defense in the NFL and appeared to be on their way to an easy clinch of a playoff spot before collapsing in the second half. One of the main reasons why the Bears struggled in the second half was due to numerous injuries on the defensive side of the ball and it wouldn’t be a surprise if that ended up being the area they focused on in the 2013 NFL Draft–which is why Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Manti Te’o could be an interesting choice at No. 20.

Despite all of the drama over the last couple of weeks involving the hoax, it’s difficult to ignore what Te’o would bring to the table from a talent perspective. Te’o played a big role in helping the Irish go undefeated during the regular season in 2012 and reach the National Championship game, but his leadership skills will obviously come into question considering all of the lying he did once discovering the truth about the hoax.

Chicago has always been a team known for their defense and while the offensive line is another area to focus on as well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they spent their first-round pick on defense once April rolls around. As crazy as it sounds, Te’o could easily turn out to be a steal considering his draft stock is slipping with all of the controversy surrounding the hoax–so it should be interesting to see how workouts go for the linebacker over the next couple of weeks.
