Today it was announced that the Buffalo Bills released two starters and fan favorites from the 2012 roster that had big time struggles this season in strong safety George Wilson (pictured above) and outside linebacker Nick Barnett (pictured below). These two guys were liked on the field as well as off of it.
This was also a cost cutting move to free up more cap space as well, with cutting Wilson the Bills saved 3.59 million dollars in cap space and Barnett saved 4 million dollars in cap space which likely means the Bills will re-sign free safety Jairus Byrd and left guard Andy Levitre to long term deals sooner than later.
While a lot of fans are shocked and upset about the moves of today, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine must have watched a lot of film and disliked what he saw. He figures to infuse some of his guys from the New York Jets and elsewhere around the league and maybe having another defensive draft to build a juggernaut defense that will blindside teams in the division and around the league.
While personally I will miss George Wilson and Nick Barnett at One Bills Drive, this is a business first and foremost and the Bills need to get either younger at the right positions and/or bring in better talent.
