Sedrick Ellis

The New Orleans Saints have been making a lot of moves this off-season but they are far from done. With the addition of new defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan, the Saints’ defensive makeover is in full swing. With Ryan at the helm there are sure to be some players added but some players could be on the way out. One player that could be done in New Orleans is defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis.

Ellis was a top 10 draft pick back in 2008 when the Saints took him with the seventh-overall pick. However, Ellis never lived up to his potential and with his rookie contract expired he most certainly will not be back with the Saints. With the Saints switching to a 3-4 defensive alignment Ellis does not seem to fit what the Saints want to do on defense.

For his career Ellis has made 173 total tackles to go along with 12.5 career sacks. However, in the past two seasons Ellis has only made 0.5 sacks in 31 games and has proven to be an ineffective pass rusher. With the Saints’ new defensive scheme an effective pass rusher is exactly what the doctor ordered and Ellis does not fit the bill.

I do not see the Saints bringing back Ellis for next season and maybe another team will be willing to take a chance on him. If the Saints let go of Ellis then maybe they are looking for an upgrade at the defensive tackle position. Perhaps a change of scenery will do Ellis some good and give him an opportunity to revive his career.
