The 2013 Draft Needs To Be All Defense For The Indianapolis Colts

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Last Year, the Indianapolis Colts focused on rebuilding their offense. Not only did they draft Andrew Luck first overall, but they added weapons around him. They added tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen. Next they added receivers T.Y. Hilton and LaVon Brazill and running back Vick Ballard. Combining with veteran receiver Reggie Wayne, it gave the Colts a pretty good offense. Now they need to fix the defense.

Chuck Pagano came in and installed a 3-4 defense with personel that was more suited for the 4-3. He brought in guys he knew in Cory Redding and Tom Zbikowski to help him install his defense. The defense was 26th in yardage. They were 21st against the pass and 29th against the run. With Dwight Freeney on his way out, the team could use some new pass rusher. They need some beef along the defensive line and some help at the corners. Jerraud Powers is a free agent and is probably the only big defensive player that may be kept.

Nothing much was expected out of the Colts in 2012. But some Luck in more ways than one helped them reach the playoffs. Their offense was a huge part of this. The Colts did a great job of rebuilding on the fly last year and they used a lot of picks on the offense. Now, in 2013, that same help is needed along the defense. Look for the Colts to heavily invest in their defense this year, and help their team take the next step. There may be some regression this year, but there’s no question, the future is bright in Indy.
