The New Orleans Saints continue to prep for their salary cap constraints this off-season. The team is working on deals to restructure a few contracts as well as signing some of their exclusive rights free agents. The Saints have already signed safety Rafael Bush and offensive guard Eric Olsen. In addition to those two players being signed the Saints have also signed tight end Michael Higgins.
Higgins worked his way up from the practice squad to the active roster last season appearing in two games. Higgins only recorded one catch last season for minus three yards but his receiving abilities are not his greatest asset.
Higgins has great size as he stands 6’5” 242 pounds and probably could make an excellent receiver but that is not how the Saints use him. Instead Higgins made the active roster because of his exceptional blocking ability. Higgins is a great blocking tight end and the Saints use him on offense as well as special teams.
Like Bush and Olsen Higgins also received a one-year contract worth $555,000 and he will become a restricted free agent in 2014. Higgins is the third string tight end and plays behind tight ends Jimmy Graham and David Thomas. Higgins will provide depth at the tight end position but he could appear in more games this season.
Blocking tight ends are becoming more difficult to come by and that is the value of Higgins. Higgins will probably never start but if he does what a team needs him to do he will always find himself on some team’s roster.
