After falling just short of Super Bowl XLVII in January, one of the top NFL rumors surrounding the Atlanta Falcons has been whether or not Tony Gonzalez would change his mind about retirement and give one last run at achieving his life-long goal of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. At first, all signs pointed to Gonzalez sticking to his decision, but now it appears the future Hall of Fame tight end may be strongly considering one final season after all.

Talks are beginning to heat up about Gonzalez returning to the field in 2013 if the “circumstances were right” and when looking at the situation with Atlanta–he couldn’t ask for a better situation. The fact that Atlanta blew a 17-point lead against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship is a feeling that will never go away until next season and it wouldn’t be a surprise if losing made this team even more motivated to win it all in 2013.

In other words–Gonzalez would have the chance to give it one final shot with a team that will most likely be seen as a Super Bowl contender heading into next season.

Despite turning 37 at the end of February, Gonzalez has proven he’s still capable of being one of the league’s top pass-catching tight ends and would provide Matt Ryan with another effective weapon in the passing game. The last thing Gonzalez wants to see happen is the Falcons winning the Super Bowl next February while he’s watching from home as a retired NFL tight end–so why not give it one last shot with nothing to lose?
