The NFL Combine begins on Saturday but even after potential draft picks workout in Indianapolis, there are also regional combines where teams can watch another tier of players workout closer to home. It appears as though for the first time in regional combine history, it will include a female participant.
Lauren Silberman will take part in the New Jersey Combine on March 2 and 3, even though she has no experience as a football player. The 28-year old Silberman’s closest football experience came when she played for the club soccer team at Wisconsin. However, in 2012 the NFL made a rule that allowed women to participate in the tryouts so Silberman is taking the chance to “fulfill my dreams by trying out to play in the world’s most competitive football league.”
Well excuse me if I don’t express the same enthusiasm. The fact that Silberman is trying out makes a complete mockery of the draft process and it’s a joke. What she is doing is more about publicity than it is about football and it’s a sham. The combines are for serious NFL prospects, not just having fun or to meet people, which is what really interests her.
“The opportunity to attend this event could not be more exciting. Getting to meet interesting people and perfect my technique from others could not be more rewarding. … Regardless of the outcome of the tryout, I hope there is a way I can contribute and strengthen the league,” Silberman said.
Exactly how can a kicker who has never competed at any high level of competition strengthen the league? She won’t and I’m guessing that the New Jersey combine will be more about Silberman than it is about the actual NFL prospects.
Please don’t get me wrong, I’m all for equality and taking people seriously but that is precisely why Silberman should not attend. She is not a serious prospect and is highly unlikely to get drafted. She could be harming other serious female players credibility in the future by trying out. She is wasting everyone’s time, including her own and making a joke of the draft process.
