When it comes to saying what’s on his mind, it’s never been a secret that Atlanta Falcons cornerback Asante Samuel is never afraid to speak up as he’s shown numerous times throughout his career. With Wes Welker currently feeling the frustration over his contract situation with the New England Patriots, Samuel decided to chime in on the matter–basically saying the wideout should “chase the money.”
Samuel was asked his opinion on the matter during a recent radio interview and discussed how Welker made the comment back in 2008 how the cornerback “chose money over championships” when he left the Patriots to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles. Ironically, Welker may find himself in a similar situation if other teams are willing to offer him more money than New England–which is why Samuel is recommending his former teammate chases the money instead.
If the Patriots really wanted to ink Welker up to a long-term deal, they could have done so by now considering the type of numbers he’s displayed over the last couple of seasons. Welker is obviously one of the most dangerous wide receivers in the NFL and New England isn’t the only team to recognize that.
Welker clearly still has plenty of good years left in him and has proven he’s worthy of a long-term deal. The Patriots better realize this sooner rather than later, because the longer they let this drag out–the chances increase of Welker being unhappy with the organization and consider leaving for another team.
