There’s no question the Philadelphia Eagles turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments of the 2012 season considering they appeared to be a Super Bowl caliber team on paper. For a defense loaded with some of the league’s biggest names, the argument can be made that Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was the biggest disappointment of all since he was one of the highest-paid members of the team and now–it appears he could be looking for a new home for the 2013 season.
NFL rumors are beginning to heat up about Philadelphia possibly parting ways with Asomugha to save some money for the 2013 season. Asomugha’s current contract will earn him $15 million in base salary for the 2013 season and for the types of performances he displayed last year–that would obviously be a huge waste on the Eagles end.
Sure, the team would still have to pay Asomugha $4 million in guaranteed money if they did end up cutting him before the 2013 season, but that’s much better than wasting $15 million on a player many have considered overrated throughout his career and wouldn’t produce the type of statistics worthy of that money. It’s been two years already and Asomugha has yet to show the type of potential Philadelphia was hoping for when they signed him from the Oakland Raiders.
Clearly, this team needs to figure out a way to bounce back as quickly as possible after last year and changes are needed–so let’s hope these rumors regarding Asomugha being cut end up coming true.
