How Long Will The Chip Kelly Honeymoon Last?

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is currently in Indianapolis attending the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. However, he has yet to hold a single Eagles camp, draft any players or coach a game in the NFL. What Kelly may have done is sour on Eagles Nation by already making one controversial move after another. Last week, he chose a coaching staff who is for the most part, a group of unproven individuals. It was also decided that Michael Vick who many thought would be looking for work right now, will be one of his quarterbacks next season. In addition, there’s a possibilty that much maligned cornerback Nnamdi Asoumgha will stay on the roster if he agrees to a massive pay cut.

It was easy for Eagles fans to embrace nearly any new head coach because of “Andy Reid Fatigue”, but it seems unusual for one to retain players that were a huge part of why the team ended up with such a bad record. Often times new regimes prefer to clean house and start fresh with just few holdovers and few players who have some familiarity with that particular coach’s philosophy. That’s what the good people of Philadelphia were expecting – a clean slate, not a reversion to the past forgettable two seasons.

Maybe Kelly sees some things that fans media don’t see and there is a method to his madness since taking over the job. Could it be that he is much more intelligent than we originally thought? Obviously, Kelly strongly believes in his coaching hires and it’s evident he thinks Michael Vick is still a good quarterback very capable of running the read option we’ll see at Lincoln Financial Field this fall. No matter what, with all the questionable moves by Kelly so far, the honeymoon between Eagles fans and their new head coach could very well be short lived.
