NFL Rumors: Seattle Seahawks won’t use franchise tag?
Coming off of an 11-5 season, the Seattle Seahawks don’t have any remodel plans in the near future. The emphasis this offseason will likely be on keeping the core of their 2012 roster intact while filling a few voids and adding some young talent via the 2013 NFL Draft.
While they do have a few valuable veterans who are scheduled for free agency come March 12, the Seahawks are weighing their options for how to keep these players in Seattle. One option is the franchise tag, but it’s starting to seem like less and less of a possibility.
“We’re still evaluating that,” Seahawks GM John Schneider said at the 2013 NFL Combine when asked about using the franchise tag. “I don’t necessarily see us using it.”
At this moment, the most likely candidate for the franchise tag is kicker Steven Hauschka. The four-year veteran is coming off of a season during which he was 23 for 23 from inside 50 yards while missing just three long-range attempts. Seeing as the tag would only cost the Seahawks $2.926 million for the reliable kicker, it wouldn’t burn a hole in their pocket and gives them a short-term option on Hauschka.
The only other reasonable options for the franchise tag are cornerback Marcus Trufant and defensive tackle Jason Jones. Both players, however, are expected to re-sign with the team rather than get slapped with the tag.
So unless the Seahawks can’t come to terms with Hauschka, there’s a good possibility that they’ll let their franchise tag go unused this offseason.
