NFL Rumors: Are the Arizona Cardinals Interested in Drafting USC QB Matt Barkley?
If there’s anything for the Arizona Cardinals from the 2012 season, it would be they’re desperately in need of help at the quarterback position if they’re going to have any chance of competing in 2013. At this point, it’s safe to say acquiring Kevin Kolb from the Philadelphia Eagles and giving him a hefty contract and with the 2013 NFL Draft quickly approaching, there’s one player they may have their eye on–USC Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley.
Despite not throwing at the NFL Combine, NFL rumors are beginning to heat up about the Cardinals interest in the USC star and as crazy as it sounds–there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be. Barkley would have been a high draft pick during last year’s draft if he decided against returning to USC for his senior season and he’s proven over the last four years what he’s capable of on the football field–so there’s no reason why Arizona shouldn’t at least consider drafting him.
The fact that Barkley threw for nearly 7,000 yards over the last two seasons to go along with 75 touchdowns shows what type of quarterback the former USC star is and what he’s capable of on the football field. Plus, with his draft stock slipping after the type of 2012 season the Trojans had, the Cardinals could end up earning a steal in April for all they know if they do end up taking Barkley.
There’s still plenty of time before the draft, but Arizona knows how much they’re in need of a quarterback–so it should be interesting to see if Barkley continues to stay on their radar.
