With Tom Brady’s New Deal Set, Will New England Patriots Give Wes Welker a Long-Term Deal Next?

(Stew Milne/USA Today Sports)

Once again, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady showed that he’s a team player after agreeing to a three-year, $27 million extension that will help the organization save money when it comes to the salary cap over the next two seasons. Now, the question on the back of everyone’s minds–should Wes Welker be expecting a new long-term deal soon?

Welker has been pushing for a long-term deal form the Patriots since last season and after the team announced their plans to not place the franchise tag on him for the 2013 season–there’s even been a bit of a concern that they could let him sign elsewhere as they seemed to be against paying him the type of money he wanted. However, New England has been showing a change of heart lately and with the recent deal by Brady, it seems like chances are higher a long-term deal could happen after all.

When looking over his numbers since joining the Patriots, there’s no question Welker is worth the money for the Patriots and it’s safe to say Brady would be more happy if his favorite target was around for the next couple of years as well. Welker has proven throughout his career to be one of the most difficult wide receivers to defend–so let’s hope this recent deal by Brady is a sign of what’s to come.

Otherwise, the frustration with Welker is only going to get worse over the next couple of weeks.
