As it usually does when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opens his mouth, something ridiculous came out of his talks with reporters recently. It’s only a day old but Jones’ the quote has gotten pretty famous with Cowboys fans all over, who are angry over his latest ramblings.
“I would grant you the decisions that have been made over the years have not produced a Super Bowl, two Super Bowls or three Super Bowls that I would like to have been a part of. And the only thing I am going to do there is keep trying and then make sure I get the credit when we do get that one…Y’all are going to give it to me, aren’t you?”
Apparently I’m the only one who’s not shocked by Jones’ latest admission. Why all the anger and disbelief by Cowboys fans over something we have known for years? Why else would Jones and Jimmy Johnson do their tap dance every year about who had more control on their Super Bowl teams of the 90s if he didn’t care about the credit?
Credit is what Jones has always wanted and it’s the exact reason he won’t give up his general manger position. He wants to be the man everyone credits for the Dallas Cowboys winning a Super Bowl, especially in today’s day and age when so much more attention seems to be paid on such ridiculous things. There’s more media, and social media, with eyes on the NFL than ever before and Jones craves the attention winning a Super Bowl would garner him. It would validate everything he’s ever done and would give him the opportunity to throw it in every single person’s face who said it couldn’t be done his way.
Of course, as I keep saying he would get even more credit if he would give up control as general manager and hired a football person but we all know that is never going to happen. But think about how much support and credit he would get if he gave up control and the Cowboys went on to win the Super Bowl? People would be giving him even more credit for seeing the error of his ways and doing the right thing; it takes a bigger man to admit he was wrong.
What probably upsets fans the most over the comments though, is that he’s never really stepped out and admitted it like he did yesterday. Thinking it is one thing and hearing it is quite another, but who cares when it’s been obvious for a long time that’s how he’s felt. Please don’t misinterpret what Jones said either, because there is nothing else Jones cares more about than winning a Super Bowl, after all, he can’t get the credit unless he wins, right?
The biggest thing that comes out of what Jones said is that he still doesn’t get it and he never will. Cowboys fans don’t care about credit, all they care about is winning. So if the day comes when the Cowboys are once again Super Bowl champions, not one fan will think about giving Jones credit, they will be celebrating the Cowboys being the best football team in the NFL again! Jones will be an afterthought.
That’s the day Jerry Jones will find out the saddest truth of all, it wasn’t all about him.
