NFL Rumors: Atlanta Falcons to Pursue Steven Jackson?
In a move that has been speculated for weeks, Steven Jackson has decided to void the final year of his contract with the St. Louis Rams and test free agency. As bad as it sounds, this move shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise to anyone considering the Rams most likely would have ended up cutting him or attempt to restructure his contract since he was scheduled to make $7 million in 2013.
The Falcons have already made it clear they have zero intention of bringing Michael Turner back for the 2013 season and bringing on a player like Jackson would improve a ground game that ranked near the bottom of the NFL during the 2012 season. Jackson’s numbers may not be as impressive as other running backs in the league, but it should be noted that he’s broken the 1,000-yard mark in each of the last eight seasons–which is impressive for any running back.
After falling just short of the Super Bowl last year, there’s no question Atlanta will be one of the top contenders once again in the NFC in 2013 and the addition of Jackson would make them that much better. It’s been a while since Jackson played for a strong contender–so it shouldn’t come as a surprise if he does end up being interested in joining the Falcons for the 2013 season.
