New York Jets Could Use Former Linebacker Right About Now

Howard Smith-US Presswire

After unloading linebackers Bart Scott and Calvin Pace, and another ‘backer in rehab in Bryan Thomas, the New York Jets are looking for some linebacker help. I bet they could use Aaron Maybin right about now.

The Jets released Maybin on Nov. 13 after he played in only eight games during the 2012 season. Maybin was picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 25 to a reserve/future contract.

Maybin was the Jets leading sacker in 2011 with six sacks across 13 games. A former top 10 pick, he never performed to his full potential with the Buffallo Bills, the team that drafted him, and after two years the Bills cut him loose. He came on the Jets as a backup linebacker, proved to be the elite pass rusher for the Jets, but grew quiet in his few appearances during the 2012 season, which was ultimately the reason why they cut him.

With the linebacker position appearing to be thin on the depth chart, it is assumed that the Jets will draft a linebacker in the draft or sign a LB in free agency. It seems that at a time like this, it would have been nice to keep Maybin, even as just a compliment for a starter.

Maybin, regardless of what people have said, showed some promise for the gang green, but was overshadowed by mediocre at best ‘backers in Greg McIntyre and Nick Bellore for back up spots. Both Bellore and McIntyre are nice backups, but they are not the answers to make up the new linebacker core of the Jets.

It’ll be interesting to see how Maybin does with the Bengals. Boasting a similar defense as the Jets, hopefully Maybin will be able to make a name for himself in Cincy. When he does, the Jets can only shake their head and admit that they have yet made another mistake in managing their players.
