The Kansas City Chiefs need a new plan in their search for a quarterback because their current one is not working. The Chiefs, according to multiple reports, have traded for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. The hope is that Smith is the answer to a quarterbacking situation that has been a disaster for years. The problem is they have gone down this road before and it has yet to work, it might be time to try something else.
Smith is the latest of what has turned into a long line of backups that have made their way to the Chiefs. He follows Steve Bono, Elvis Grbac and Matt Cassel. All three, now four with Smith, showed promise in limited time and the Chiefs gambled on all of them. To this point, it hasn’t worked and the Chiefs are still trying to find that “next guy.” Smith does have more of a track record than the other three, but that doesn’t change the blueprint that has failed.
Bono and Grbac were both moderately successful with, ironically, the 49ers but were failures in Kansas City. Cassel turned one decent season with the New England Patriots into a starting job with the Chiefs. He has been okay at times, but overall, Cassel has not worked out either. Now the Chiefs are going to try it again with Smith, do they not know what the definition of insanity is?
If the Chiefs are serious about finding a quarterback, it’s time to look to the draft. It’s a cruel twist of fate that they have the first pick in this year’s draft and the quarterback class is weak, but that’s the only way they are going to get off of this merry-go-round that is leading them nowhere. I don’t know if projected first-round pick Geno Smith is going to be any good in the NFL but if I was a Chiefs fan, I’d rather take my chances on him than another backup. In one of the most amazing facts in the NFL, no quarterback who has been drafted by the Chiefs has won a game for them since 1987. That was Todd Blackledge who was in the same draft class with John Elway.
Does Smith make the Chiefs better? Of course he does but how much better? They are not going to beat out Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos; they might sneak in as a wild card if everything goes perfectly. More likely, though, Smith will improve the Chiefs just enough to get them to 7-9 or 8-8, and then what? They are right back to where they started from, a .500 team with no franchise quarterback.
It’s understandable why the Chiefs made the trade for Smith, the quarterback position in the NFL is that important but it’s time for a new approach. This one is not working.
