With all of the contract restructuring going on by the Dallas Cowboys today, it’s pretty amazing the team actually found time to sign a player. The Cowboys locked up long snapper L.P. Ladouceur with a new five-year deal that included a $600,000 signing bonus. The Cowboys and Ladouceur’s agent Gil Scott announced the signing today with a simple statement.
“They wanted him, and he wanted to be there,” Scott said.
It may sound a little strange but this is a great signing by the Cowboys. Ladouceur is one of the best long snappers in the league and since he’s joined the Cowboys he’s never had a bad snap. That’s an impressive streak for a player who joined the Cowboys in 2005. There are role players who make a difference for every team and Ladouceur makes a difference for the Cowboys. Think about it, when was the last time you had to worry about a snap in Dallas?
All you have to do is go back to the Oakland Raiders season opener if you don’t think long snappers can make a difference in a game because three botched snaps cost the Raiders any chance at winning that game. You can also look to the New York Giants bad snap in their playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers in 2002 and see how important a reliable long snapper is.
The Cowboys made a smart move in signing one of the game’s best long snappers. Let’s hope they continue to make these types of great decisions throughout the rest of the off-season.
