Kansas City Chiefs fans have made it loud and clear.
They heavily prefer Alex Smith over Matt Cassel. ESPN SportsNation recently polled sports fans comparing Cassel and Smith. Smith is obviously the hotter quarterback right now coming off a great two year stretch winning games and protecting the football. Cassel on the other hand has been dreadful lately. Cassel has 16 touchdowns and 21 interceptions the last two seasons. Smith has 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions the last two seasons.
SportsNation asked the question:
“Are you convinced Alex Smith is an upgrade over Matt Cassel?”
As of Tuesday March 5, 2013, the results are completely lopsided as followed. Based on over 8,500 votes, 84 percent of America says “yes” and most importantly 92 percent of Missouri voters say “yes.” Chiefs Nation has made it clear that the Matt Cassel era in Kansas City is over. Even 83 percent of international voters picked Smith over Cassel. It’s time to embrace a new starting quarterback. New head coach Andy Reid has a lot of decisions to make at the quarterback position this off-season.
The Chiefs may keep Cassel as a backup considering it will be very tough to trade him. Cassel is scheduled to make $16.5 million the next two seasons combined. He is not a free agent until the 2015 season. Releasing him is a possibility, however, a small cap hit would come with it. If the Chiefs decide to release Smith they will save $6 million in cap space.
With 92 percent of Chiefs Nation and 84 percent of the country voting Alex Smith over Matt Cassel, it’s obvious a change is needed.
