It’s been a long battle for Wes Welker when it comes to receiving a long-term contract, but luckily for him–one of the top New England Patriots rumors on Tuesday involves the two parties getting closer to an agreement for a new deal.
With the type of numbers he’s displayed over the last couple of seasons, one would think the Patriots would have given Welker a long-term deal by now, but it’s safe to say the wide receiver has been a victim of New England taking advantage of his situation. The Patriots have seemed hesitant towards giving Welker a long-term deal due to his age–which is understandable from the perspective of the organization.
Still, when looking at what Welker has accomplished over the last couple of seasons, it’s no secret he deserves to be paid and hopefully the two sides work out a deal sooner rather than later. Not only has Welker caught at least 111 receptions in four of his last five seasons, he’s recorded at least 1,300 receiving yards in three of the last four seasons as well.
New England realizes how valuable Welker is to the offense and the last thing they want to do is see him end up with a different team they may have to face. Plus, it’s safe to say Welker has developed into Tom Brady‘s favorite target over the last couple of years–so the Patriots realize how important it is to keep their quarterback happy for as long as they can.
