Detroit Lions Rumors: Ahmad Bradshaw A Good Fit For Team
With all of the rumors regarding Reggie Bush signing with the Detroit Lions floating around, another player is quietly gaining interest from analysts around the NFL. Last month, the New York Giants released veteran running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who appears to be the better fit in Detroit.
While Bradshaw is still nursing a foot injury, he remains a cheaper investment than Bush. There’s no reason Bush should ask for less than $5 million per year on his next contract with his new team. Most free agents come with a slightly higher price tag, and I think a team will eventually pony up the dollars for Reggie.
Bradshaw was released and should command between $3-4 million per season with the team that signs him. The Giants found their future running backs last season in David Wilson and Andre Brown, but Bradshaw still managed to crack 1000 yards.
The combination of Reggie Bush, Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell would work out fine for the Lions, but Bradshaw, Leshoure and Bell fits more into the Lions budget. If the Lions do indeed intend to seek the services of another running back, look for them to take a hard stare in Bradshaw’s direction.
Bradshaw is a better running back than Bush. He can run players over and also has some nifty moves in the open field. He has also proven himself as a reliable receiver in the past three seasons. During that time, he has 104 receptions for 826 yards and two scores. Bush however, is indeed the far better receiving option. In his seven seasons, he has amassed 2730 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The question of the day, however, is what is the price difference between the two players? Does $2-3 million more per season offset the production? The Lions are a pass-first team and ranked third in total offense in 2012. However, their ground game ranked 23rd.
I’m not totally sold on the Lions strong need for another rusher. I think they can find a decent compliment in the draft as it is filled with 10-15 carry running backs. A third or fourth-round back will come far cheaper than Bradshaw or Bush.
But for arguments sake, if the Lions go hunting in the open free agency market this season, expect them to consider the price tag.
My money is on Ahmad Bradshaw and not Reggie Bush.
