New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Expected to Let Go of Two Defensive Linemen

Sedrick Ellis

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints continue to work their way under the salary cap and with the restructuring of defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley’s contract, the team is well on their way. The team still has a lot of work to do to get under the cap so it would make sense to not bring back some players.

The Saints have already cut ties with some players, and more players will either be cut or not re-signed. Two players that might not be re-signed are defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis and defensive end Turk McBride.

Ellis is essentially a top-ten draft bust that never panned out for the Saints. Ellis was selected by the Saints with the seventh overall pick back in 2008 and has not done much for the team during his tenure. He has only recorded 12.5 sacks, and has never been the dynamic pass rusher the Saints hoped he could be.

Furthermore, Ellis is set to be an unrestricted free agent and it seems like a no-brainer that he will not be re-signed. Also, the Saints have not had any contract talks with him, nor have they had talks with unrestricted free agent McBride for that matter.

McBride has spent the last two seasons with the Saints, but has only appeared in 15 games during that time. Furthermore, McBride only managed to make a measly nine tackles and two sacks during those 15 games, something most players could do in one game. McBride will not be giving the Saints any production in the upcoming season, so he will likely be gone too.

If the Saints let go of Ellis and McBride, not only will they free up some cap space, but it will also allow them to develop their younger defensive lineman. At this point, the Saints would be wise to let these two players go and start developing their defensive line of the future.
