The start of the Free Agent market is just days away and the Miami Dolphins Rumors are kicking into full gear. The latest rumor to be spit out of the mill claims the Dolphins have a “moderate” interest in free agent safety, Charles Woodson.
Woodson has clearly been one of the best defensive backs in the NFL over the last decade. He is a true leader in the locker room and a general on the field. He has defied age and injury to remain among the most feared defensive players in the game today.
But is he still capable of playing at a level that will benefit a team on the rise like the Dolphins?
A Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, Woodson switched from his customary cornerback position to safety for the Green Bay Packers last season. The move protected Woodson from being exposed by the premier receivers in the NFC North he would have been lined up with twice a year. Matching up against Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall would have been a test for Woodson even during his prime, let alone in the latter part of his career. Moving Woodson to safety allowed him to stay on the field and lead the defense without being a liability.
Because of this, there is no telling just how eroded Woodson’s coverage skills have become and as beneficial as his leadership skills may be, the Dolphins may not see this as an ideal marriage.
The Dolphins have been working towards getting younger and are clearly trying to build for the future. Despite the positives he could bring to the team, chasing the 36 year-old Woodson would be counterproductive to both getting younger and building for the future.
Woodson to Miami has a nice sound to it, but this rumor is unlikely to grow into anything more substantial.
