San Francisco 49ers Steal Anquan Boldin from Baltimore Ravens
The San Francisco 49ers have acquired Anquan Boldin from the Baltimore Ravens for a sixth-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft pending a physical. However, Boldin is currently on a mission in Africa so the deal will have to wait until he returns in order to become official.
The Ravens had asked Boldin to take a pay cut to stay with the team. He was scheduled to make $6 million this season and carries a cap figure of $7.531 million. However, Boldin had said he was unwilling to take the pay cut. Earlier this off-season Boldin had said he would rather retire than play for another team, a position he obviously no longer holds.
Last season, Boldin had 65 catches for 921 yards and four touchdowns. Forty-five of those catches went for first downs. He added another 22 catches for 380 yards and four touchdowns in the Ravens’ Super Bowl run coming up with key catches again and again.
The loss of Boldin will obviously hurt the Ravens for the time being. There should be plenty of options in free agency and in the draft but replacing Boldin’s experience and chemistry with quarterback Joe Flacco, who recently signed a record deal with the Ravens, will be tough.
This was a deal the Ravens had to make. Getting a sixth-rounder is certainly a lot better than releasing him which was the Ravens’ other option. Still, this is a move that won’t be popular with Ravens fans who still have Boldin’s playoff heroics fresh in their minds.
Boldin will join a 49ers receiving corps that already features Michael Crabtree, Mario Manningham, A.J. Jenkins, Ted Ginn and tight end Vernon Davis giving Colin Kaepernick another reliable target as the 49ers try to redeem themselves after falling just short of a Super Bowl win, falling to Boldin’s Ravens.
The question will remain, could the Ravens have gotten a better deal than a sixth-round choice? In the meantime, GM Ozzie Newsome will use the cap space and the pick to try to defend his team’s Super Bowl title. It is an unpopular move but one that had to be made at this point in the Ravens’ history.
From the 49ers standpoint this was a fantastic move that gets them one step closer on paper to the one thing that has eluded them the last two seasons, a Super Bowl win.
