Buffalo Bills Release Ryan Fitzpatrick Hours After DeadSpin GM Phone Call Released

Matt Cassel sneaks it

What an insane day for the Buffalo Bills. First, earlier today DeadSpin published a private phone call between Bills GM Buddy Nix and Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik. Nix trashed Fitzpatrick in the phone call, so the next piece of news should not have been so surprising. The legality of DeadSpin publishing the phone call is apparently under review, so we will keep you posted on that. Then next, the Bills released the veteran quarterback.

“We kept every possible option open right down to the wire when we had to make a decision on whether to keep Ryan,” Nix said. “In the end, we had to do what we feel is best for our football team, and it was a very difficult decision. Ryan did some great things as our starting quarterback. He is a class act, a terrific guy with a great family and has been involved in many charitable endeavors in our community. But difficult decisions often have to be made, and so we are moving forward.”

Fitzpatrick, a Harvard graduate, came off a year where he threw for 3,400 yards with 24 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

The question needs to be asked. Were they trying to trade Fitzpatrick and then when the DeadSpin call was released they simply had no more leverage? Strange days full of questions in Buffalo, and hopefully in the coming days we can get some answers.
