On the eve of 2013 NFL Free Agency, the Detroit Lions appear to be an early winner for some big names. Obviously, the Lions are a favorite for running back Reggie Bush, which I hinted at in an article last month. Tonight’s latest rumor revolves around safety Dashon Goldson.
It’s surprising to me that the Lions are a frontrunner for Goldson, as he is one of the best safeties on the open market. According to Adam Schefter the Lions are one of four teams in the running for Goldson. The other three teams are the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Lions and Buccaneers are the favorites according to Schefter’s source.
Four teams – SF, PHIL, DET, TB – in play on Dashon Goldson – but DET, TB considered favorites. TB also in on CBs Sean Smith, B. Grimes, DRC.

Since being drafted in the 2007 NFL Draft, Goldson has spent his entire NFL career with the 49ers. In 2012, Goldson signed a $6.2 million one year deal, after considering other teams. The 28 year old safety has been one of the most consistent players on the 49ers the last four seasons and helped the team reach Super Bowl XLVII.
In 2012, Goldson had 69 tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, three interceptions and 11 pass deflections. Goldson played in all 16 games in 2012 and has only missed two games in the last four seasons. Over those four seasons, where Goldson has been a consistent starter, he has 310 tackles, three sacks, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 14 interceptions and one touchdown.
Signing Goldson would be a huge boost for the Lions. Goldson was named a Pro Bowler the last two seasons and is one of the best at his position. The Lions clearly need upgrades in their secondary and could be thin at safety with Louis Delmas testing the free agency market. It’s surprising to see the Lions linked to some big names and fans should be optimistic for the 2013-2014 season.
