San Francisco 49ers Trade of Alex Smith Official, Big Moves to Follow

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

This was in the works weeks before, but it could not become official until today. Former San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith will be joining the Kansas City Chiefs.

“We would like to thank Alex for his contributions to the 49ers organization over the past eight years,” 49ers GM Trent Baalke said Tuesday. “He is a true professional who represented the 49ers with class on and off the field.”

Former 49ers QB Trent Dilfer called the AFC “top heavy” at the Super Bowl Media conference and he also said he liked the fit of Smith on the Chiefs since in the AFC they might be able to make a playoff run. He mentored Smith during his rookie year and he thinks Smith and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will be a great fit together. Dilfer said that Reid is the kind of coach who can get the most out the talent on the roster, and even got a little dig in on Donovan McNabb in the process.

Smith’s trade to the Chiefs likely means Matt Cassel is on his way out. It also means that the moves will not be done yet by the 49ers. They recently traded for Anquan Boldin, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they try to nabb Darrelle Revis as well if the price is right.
