The city of Detroit will always be synonymous with the numbers 313. These numbers represent the area code for the most populous city in Michigan. On Wednesday, as NFL free agency began, the city of Detroit had one of the most memorable 313 days ever.
The city of Detroit celebrated 313 day on March 13th, 2013. Unofficially named 313 day, the date also represented an important day for the Detroit Lions. Despite a 4-12 record in the 2012 season, Detroit remains a popular destination for free agents who believe in the future of the franchise.
The Lions completed the following deals as part of 313 Day:
- Re-signed CB Chris Houston (5 years $25 mil)
- Re-signed RB Joique Bell (1 year $630 thousand)
- Signed RB Reggie Bush (4 years $16 mil)
- Signed S Glover Quin
- Signed DE/DT Jason Jones ($3 years $9.5 mil)
The signing of these free agents is huge for the future of the Lions franchise. Reggie Bush is possibly the biggest free agent signing in Lions history. The addition of Quin and Jones on defense made the day that much better for Detroit.
Eminem said it best in the final rap battle in the movie 8 mile:
“Now everybody from the 313, put your hands up and follow me”
I cleaned up the language from this quote, but the drive remains. The city of Detroit got stronger on Wednesday with a celebration of 313 Day. Local hospital Detroit Medical Center’s Sinai Grace Hospital gave away free Pure Michigan to newborns on Wednesday.
In the end, while the entire city was celebrating 313 day, the Lions had a celebration of their own. The Lions became that much better on Wednesday and couldn’t have picked a better day.
