With the addition of free agent running back Steven Jackson and tight end Tony Gonzalez coming back for one more year, the Atlanta Falcons now have pressure to deliver a Super Bowl next year. The window could be smaller than most Falcons’ fans realize. It would be disappointing indeed for Gonzalez to come back, after much thought, only to fall short one more year. Will the weight be too much for the Falcons’ wings though? It could end up being too much.
A lot of that pressure will be on Matt Ryan’s shoulders and how they stack up with the rest of the NFC will largely determine how far the Falcons get. Ryan now has no excuses with the number of weapons he has a wide receiver, tight end, and running back.
They fell last year to the San Francisco 49ers and they will be an obstacle for sure. They recently traded a sixth round pick for All Pro Anquan Boldin and have quite a few picks in the upcoming draft. The Seattle Seahawks recently traded for Percy Harvin and loom as an NFC contender as well. It will be interesting to see if the Falcons have any more major moves forthcoming, because if they fall short again next year, then they will have some explaining to do.
