Seattle Seahawks part ways with WR Ben Obomanu
Coming off one of the most exciting seasons in franchise history, the Seattle Seahawks are looking to trim the fat and make sure that they field the leanest, meanest roster possible when the 2013 campaign finally rolls around.
In hopes of getting to that point, the Seahawks severed ties with wide receiver Ben Obomanu on Friday in a move that comes as a shock to no one. Obomanu was due $2.3 million this upcoming season, far more money than the Seahawks were willing to spend on a wide receiver buried on the depth chart.
Throughout his seven seasons in Seattle, Obomanu has hauled in 87 passes for 1,209 yards and seven touchdowns. His best year came in 2010 (30 receptions, 494 yards, four touchdowns) as the Seahawks were forced to start him six games due to a lack of talent at the position. This past year, he only saw the field in eight games, managing four catches, before ending up on the IR list with a wrist injury.
With Percy Harvin now in the fold and Golden Tate coming off of a breakout year, Obomanu was seen as expendable. His average athleticism and inability to separate have hindered him since entering the league and have led to his demise as part of the Seahawks receiving corps.
Now on the open market, Obomanu likely won’t generate much interest from other teams. He’s been a depth player for a team that hasn’t had much success at wide receiver in recent history, never managing to assert himself as a reliable weapon. If he’s lucky, he might get a look as a camp body.
The Seahawks are ready to make a run at Super Bowl XLVIII, and Obomanu clearly wasn’t a part of their plan to get there.
