The Green Bay Packers were rumored to be close to signing veteran running back Steven Jackson, were not able to sign him in the end. Now, the Packers are still looking for a halfback for their backfield. With a lot of the top running backs already being signed, the options in free agency are becoming slim.
However, there are still some quality running backs that the Packers can sign that would fit well into their system.
Kevin Smith would be the perfect option for the Packers and their way of playing on offense. Head coach Mike McCarthy calls passing plays for the majority of the plays, and while Green Bay wants to establish a running game, they mostly abandon that philosophy once the game starts.
Smith is the type of running back who is excellent in the passing game and can provide opportunities in the screen game, which can help the Packers offensive line. The only downside with Smith is that he is injury-prone and cannot be relied on to stay healthy for the entire season.
Another option would be Peyton Hillis. It was only a few years ago that Hillis was lighting up the football world and dominating the line of scrimmage. However, his career went downhill quickly and he was the backup in Kansas City to Jamaal Charles last season. He can still be a reliable player for the Packers, who are missing a power running back who can be used in short yardage situations.
The choices are now few for the Packers, but they can still get a quality running back for a small price. If they don’t get a free agent running back, expect Green Bay to use one of their draft picks to add more depth to their backfield.
