One of the top Cincinnati Bengals rumors this offseason has been whether or not the team would be able to convince Rey Maualuga to return for the 2013 season. While the linebacker drew interest from a few other teams, rumors are beginning to heat up about the Bengals closing in on a deal with Maualuga–which would be great news with the 2013 NFL Draft right around the corner.
The Bengals’ defense has been flying under the radar over the last two seasons and Maualuga will play a key factor if this team has any chance of being near the top once again in 2013. Nobody expected Cincinnati to reach the playoffs each of the last two seasons, but they have thanks to a solid defense along with the emergence of Andy Dalton and A.J. Green on offense–so the potential is certainly there once again.
Maualuga has spent the first four years of his career in Cincinnati and if these rumors end up being true about him closing in on a deal–this will continue an offseason of great moves by Cincinnati. The Bengals realize how important it is to bring back as many members from last year’s defense for the 2013 season to make sure they have what it takes to compete in the AFC North.
Marvin Lewis is still looking for that first career playoff win as head coach of the Bengals–so it should be interesting to see what other moves they make throughout the rest of the offseason.
