Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey take over a team deceivingly ready to take a leap. While it’s hard to ignore the fact that Kansas City went 2-14 last season — good for worst in the league — taking over the Chiefs includes far more perks than the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Recently-acquired cornerback Dunta Robinson notices how flush with talent this roster already appears on paper.
“Those guys, when I came in, they were a wonderful group of guys and they made me feel right at home. The guys that they have on this football team – a team that went 2-14 and you produced six Pro Bowlers, that’s pretty amazing,” Robinson told KCChiefs.com. “So, you understand that on both sides of the ball, there is a lot of talent here. Maybe a piece here or maybe a piece there is what they needed.
“I think coach Reid and Dorsey did a great job of going out and filling those holes. I think we have the potential to be a very good football team.”
With Pro Bowlers Jamaal Charles, Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Derrick Johnson, Eric Berry and Dustin Colquitt in tow, Reid and Dorsey have filled holes both inherited and created. Kansas City has filled out its starting cornerback spot alongside Brandon Flowers, signing free agents Sean Smith and Robinson to deals after last offseason’s Stanford Routt acquisition didn’t quite work out.
The Chiefs have also cut starting right tackle Eric Winston and starting quarterback Matt Cassel after trading for erstwhile San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Alex Smith. The cutting of Winston has created widespread speculation that the Chiefs may select a tackle with the top pick this April.
